Corten Steel, also known as weathering steel, is a high-strength, low-alloy carbon steel first developed in the 1930s. It includes small amounts of copper, chromium, and phosphorus — ingredients that help it form a protective, rust-coloured surface when exposed to the elements.

The name ‘Cor-Ten’ is derived from its two standout features: corrosion resistance and tensile strength. In other words, it’s designed to be durable while naturally developing a stable patina that protects it from deeper corrosion.

How Does the Patina Work?

The outer layer of rust that forms on Corten isn’t a flaw — it’s a feature. This reddish-brown surface shields the steel beneath from further degradation. If it gets scratched, the protective layer regenerates over time, making it remarkably resilient in outdoor environments.

To encourage the patina to develop, Corten needs exposure to changing weather — especially alternating wet and dry periods. If your product is placed in a covered or indoor space, the weathering process will take longer or may not occur at all. We can accelerate the patina process before delivery upon request.

Generally, you’ll see signs of the patina after a few rainy days, with full development taking 6–9 months depending on climate. The look continues to evolve over the first 2–3 years, especially in areas with fluctuating humidity and temperature.

Corten Steel Care Instrutions:

Corten Steel (also known as weathering steel) is designed to form a stable, protective rust-like surface when exposed to the elements. This natural process gives it its distinctive look and long-lasting durability. Here’s how to care for your Corten piece to ensure it weathers beautifully and performs well for years to come.

 Weathering Process

• Natural Patina Formation: Corten Steel develops its rich orange-brown patina through exposure to alternating wet and dry conditions.

• Timeframe: The initial rust layer can form within days, with full weathering usually taking 6–9 months depending on climate.

• Note: If your piece is placed indoors or sheltered from rain, the patina may take much longer to develop or may not form fully.

 General Maintenance

• Do not seal or paint the surface unless you want to freeze the patina at a specific stage — Corten is intended to weather naturally.

• Avoid constant moisture. Prolonged exposure to damp conditions (such as wet soil or poor drainage) can accelerate corrosion beyond the protective layer.

• Wipe away debris such as wet leaves, dirt, or bird droppings with a soft cloth or brush to avoid staining or streaking.

• Avoid harsh chemicals — just clean with water if needed. No detergents or rust removers should be used.

 Coastal and Humid Environments

• Corten is not recommended for use within 2km of the sea or in persistently damp locations.

• Salt and moisture can interrupt the drying cycle, preventing the protective patina from forming correctly.

• If used in these areas, monitor the steel closely, and consider sealing once desired rust colour is achieved.

 Optional Finishing Touches

• If you wish to preserve the colour once the patina has formed, a clear matte sealer can be applied.

• Apply only once the surface is completely dry and rust development has stabilised (usually after 9–12 months).

Mild Steel 5mm thick ( only available 150cm height)

How Does Mild Steel Weather?

Mild Steel will also rust when exposed to the elements. The patina develops in much the same way as Corten, though it may take slightly longer — around 12 to 18 months to fully mature, depending on environmental factors.

Once rusted, the appearance is very similar to Corten, though you might notice slightly redder or browner tones. Corten often starts out with more orange and yellow hues due to its copper content.

Unlike Corten, however, Mild Steel’s rust isn’t self-limiting — it will continue to corrode over time unless sealed. To preserve a particular look, many people apply a clear protective coating once the desired patina is reached.

• You can slow down the rusting process of outdoor mild steel by applying protective coatings once the tree has developed the desired patina. Here are a few effective options:
  

  Oil or Wax Coating

  • Boiled Linseed Oil – Forms a protective barrier against moisture.
  • WD-40 or Machine Oil – A temporary water-repellent solution that requires reapplication.
  • Paste Wax (e.g., Renaissance Wax) – Adds a thin protective layer while enhancing the finish.

• Polishing: If a high-shine finish is desired, use a non-abrasive stainless steel polish occasionally to restore its luster. we use autosalve metal polish.

• Professional Installation Services: We offer professional installation service. Our team will work closely with you to arrange a suitable day for the installation, which typically takes around two hours.
• Soft Ground (Grass or Soil): For secure installation, choose the “In Ground” option in menu -the sculpture features a 30cm anchor spike and must be securely set into the ground using post concrete to ensure stability and safety.
• Hard Ground (Patio or Concrete): The sculpture needs to be bolted down securly. The tree will feature a mounting plate with four pre-drilled holes 13 ⌀. , bolts are NOT included (we recommend all thread and chemfix) , choose “Above ground option in menu”
